have a vision to connect the poor of their developing region with
Western markets. We look for companies who pay a fair, living wage for
their particular region and who are committed to creating a workplace
that ensures no child labor or forced labor. We carefully screen our
wholesalers to ensure they are committed to non discrimination, to
environmental sustainability, and to favorable work conditions.
Together, we work with existing skill sets in local economies, instead
of changing cultural traditions or simply giving handouts, which
encourages independence from outside aid that could only be a temporary
source of help.
We are currently purchasing our products from JOYN (Northern India), Handmade Expressions (multiple rural villages throughout India), and are collaborating on product designs for El Transito Centro de Artes (Nicaragua). We just recently expanded our wholesalers to include the lovely scarves and clutches of Craftwork Cambodia. We are excited to have begun discussions with contacts in Colombia, Uganda, Nigeria, and Nepal."
